Success Tips

Attend the Webinar: The February 5, 2026 applicant webinar covers NOFO details, how to write competitive applications, and commonly asked questions. This is invaluable preparation.

Emphasize Outcomes: Strong applications focus on measurable environmental outcomes (e.g., acres restored, pollution reduced, behaviors changed) not just knowledge gains.

Local Focus: Clearly define your local/regional scope and demonstrate deep understanding of specific environmental issues in your community.

Robust Evaluation: Include detailed evaluation plan with specific metrics, data collection methods, and timeline for measuring success.

Demonstrate Capacity: Show your organization's track record, staff expertise, and infrastructure to successfully execute the project.

Common Questions

EPA Environmental Education Grants fund projects that increase public awareness and knowledge of environmental issues and provide skills for responsible environmental stewardship. Eligible projects include developing environmental education curricula, training educators, community-based environmental workshops, and innovative approaches to environmental literacy. Technology-enabled projects using AI for environmental monitoring and education platforms are increasingly funded.

Eligible applicants include local and tribal governments, state environmental agencies, colleges and universities, nonprofits, and noncommercial educational broadcasting entities. Individuals and federal agencies are not eligible. Awards typically range from USD 50,000 to USD 200,000 per project over 1 to 3 years. The program requires that projects be designed and implemented locally and demonstrate measurable improvements in environmental literacy among target audiences.

Eligible applicants include state education agencies, nonprofits, tribal governments, and universities. For-profit entities may participate as subcontractors within eligible proposals. Awards range from modest grants under fifty thousand dollars to larger multi-year projects. The programme prioritizes community engagement, underserved population outreach, and measurable environmental literacy improvement through innovative pedagogical methodologies.

Startups developing environmental monitoring platforms or sustainability curriculum software can participate as partners within eligible institution proposals. This indirect access validates products within structured educational settings while generating compensation for licensing and implementation. Successful pilot deployments through EPA-funded projects create compelling reference cases strengthening subsequent direct commercial sales positioning.
